This is a question I'm thinking a lot about at the moment - my very brief current stance on the matter is below before a little chuck together recipe, however I am currently listening to a super interesting podcast from the infamous Joe Rogan where he interviews Paul Saladino, a chap that is a huge advocate of the 'carnivore diet' and an 'animal-based' diet, as he described it! I'm always willing to challenge my opinions and learn from others so watch this space...although, disclaimer, can't see myself eating nothing but offal any time in the near future!
First things first, let's clear things up - 'PLANT-BASED' DOES NOT MEAN VEGAN.
Food is food, no food should be demonised as 'good' or 'bad', there are more optimal choices nutritionally for our health, training and recovery and the health of the planet, but despite Veganism becoming more and more popular in recent years, meat and dairy can offer so much for our diets.
However, a little food for thought (not sorry about the pun!) around basing our diets around being 'plant-based'.
Plant-based diets emphasise eating whole foods - think minimally processed, fruits, vegetables, wholegrain, nuts and seeds.
Basing our diets around these things with a little bit of other 'stuff' thrown in there too can't be too far wrong, right?!
So here's a little something I threw together last week - easy, quick, no mad kitchen skills, almond flour or chickpea juice required...
CHARGRILLED TERIYAKI PAK CHOI -
Sounds faaaaancy, right?!
Well all you gotta do is to slice your pak choi in half length ways and pop it face down in a pan while you cook some rice, stir fry some more veg around it, pop in a little teriyaki sauce (or make your own!) and a few Chinesey spices - think 5 spice perhaps - alternately things like chilli, cayenne - anything you like really and mix the rice in when it's done and voila!!
Now there is a little protein in the rice but I added some nuts on top for a little more - mix it up however you like!
Let me know if you have a go or have any 'plant-based' delights to share!
Peace and love, A x
